Help still needed! Donations helping flood victims, UFCW families in Alberta

ufcw red deer alberta flood donationsHigh River, Alta. – July 4, 2013 – With hundreds of UFCW members in Alberta still facing tremendous hardship due to the worst flood in the province’s history, UFCW Canada Locals 401 and 1118 continue to lead efforts to secure emergency relief for affected members and their families.

Combining their efforts with the UFCW national and international offices, Locals 401 and 1118 have created an emergency relief fund – called the UFCW Canada Alberta Flood Relief Fund – that is now in the process of providing affected UFCW members and families with urgently needed aid.

Hundreds of UFCW members have been displaced from their jobs and homes since the flood first hit Alberta. As a result, many UFCW members – including more than 2,000 Cargill workers – have been without a paycheque for weeks, and are in desperate need of financial assistance.

Making matters worse, a growing number of insurance companies are leaving Albertans high and dry, claiming to devastated and desperate policy holders that there is no overland flooding coverage in Canada.

Start-up resources for the Fund were generously donated by the UFCW Canada National Council and a number of Local Unions from across North America, but additional funds are still badly needed, and UFCW Canada is calling all activists, friends and supporters to donate what they can to the relief efforts.

Donations to the emergency relief fund may be made by endorsed cheque to*:
