Canada’s leading voice for retail workers supports Loblaw effort in Bangladesh

Toronto – May 3, 2013 – Canada’s leading voice for retail workers, the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW Canada), is offering its condolences to the families of the garment workers who were recently killed in Dhaka, Bangladesh, and partnering with Loblaw Companies Limited to lead the effort for a higher standard of scrutiny, accountability and health and safety protections in the global garment industry.

Toronto – May 3, 2013 – Over 400 UFCW Canada activists from across Ontario recently gathered in Toronto to participate in the UFCW Canada Locals 175 & 633 Education and Finance Conference – dedicated to building the strength and solidarity of Canada’s largest Local Union.

New contract for retail food members at Provigo Windsor in Quebec

Quebec – May 4, 2013 – Retail food members at the Provigo store in Windsor, Quebec, are now enjoying the benefits of a new collective agreement in their workplace. The retail food workers at this store voted 86% in favour of the agreement in principle reached by their bargaining committee. The new labour contract between UFCW Canada Local 500 and the employer is to expire in April 2019.

Ottawa – May 6, 2013 – According to a recent report by the International Labour Organization (ILO), worldwide unemployment will increase by 5.1 million this year – for a total of 202 million people around the globe who are unemployed.
