Special insurance coverage helps widow of AWA member

Villahermosa, Tabasco, Mexico  — Linda Marlene Alvarez Mendez, widow of Crisanto Jimenez Gomez, has received a $2,500 insurance benefit following the accidental death of her husband earlier this year in Canada. As a member of the Agriculture Workers Alliance (AWA), Mr. Gomez was automatically covered by a no-cost accidental death policy issued by the American Income Life Insurance (AILI) company — the result of an historical agreement reached between AILI and UFCW Canada in September 2011.

Facts facing Rural women in Canada

In most developing countries, agriculture is still the most important source of employment for women in rural areas. Women are more likely than men to earn low-wages, to work part-time and seasonally, and they tend to be paid less than their male counterparts.

UFCW Canada and CONOFAM sign migrant workers protection pact

UFCW Canada and Mexico institution CONOFAM have signed a new agreement to protect the labour rights of Mexican migrant workers in Canada. CONOFAM (the National Coordinator of State Agencies for Migrant Affairs) provides migrant information and advocacy services throughout 29 of Mexico states, including the Federal District of Mexico.

Walmart slapped with another class action suit

A new class action lawsuit alleges that Walmart Stores Inc. and its staffing agencies broke minimum wage and overtime laws in the United States by requiring temporary workers to appear early for work, stay late to complete work, work through lunches and breaks and participate in trainings without compensation.

Over 80 workers at Great Lakes Specialty Meats in Mitchell, Ontario are the union’s newest packing house members after recently voting “Yes!” to joining UFCW Canada Local 175.

JBS takes over XL operations in Brooks, Alberta

Over 2,000 UFCW Canada members in Brooks, Alberta are hopeful that a new “management services” arrangement at Lakeside Packers – Canada’s largest beef processing facility – will improve conditions in their workplace, and urge the government to put public safety first by investing in an adequate food safety system.
