Government of Newfoundland and Labrador implements card-based certification with Bill 37

The province of Newfoundland and Labrador has joined Manitoba, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and Quebec in establishing a card-based certification system that provides for automatic union certification where a majority of employees in a bargaining unit sign a union membership card.

UFCW Guide to Bargaining for Work-Family Issues

The UFCW Guide to Bargaining for Work-Family Issues has just been released.The guide was developed by the National Council Women’s Advisory Committee to help UFCW Canada activists and negotiating committee members strengthen the family friendly language in their collective bargaining agreements — to gain additional protections needed for a healthy work and life balance, and strong contract language that prioritizes the needs of modern workers and family providers.

Hampstead crash survivors share their story at Toronto symposium and launch of international "Right2Stay" campaign

Two migrant agriculture workers who survived a horrific crash near Hampstead, Ontario that killed 11 others in February, told their story at Toronto's Ryerson University on October 2. Javier Alba Medina and Juan Ariza Mejia were critically injured when the van they were travelling in with other Peruvian migrant workers was struck by another vehicle on February 6. Since then, the men have been recuperating at a London, Ontario facility, but neither will possibly ever fully regain their physical capacities.
