Aspiring nursing student receives BDM scholarship to help accomplish her dream

Every year UFCW Canada awards 18 dedicated and commendable students with the Beggs-Dowling-Mathieu Scholarship of $1,000 each. One of this year’s recipients is Cindy Coombs, a dedicated university student working towards a Bachelor of Nursing Degree at the Memorial University of Newfoundland. Cindy is currently a practicing LPN (Licensed Practical Nurse) who realized she wanted to further her education in nursing shortly after she started working in the field.

Fairness for Zellers Workers petition filed with Quebec National Assembly

Québec City, QC – June 14, 2012 - A province-wide petition has been filed in the Quebec National Assembly, calling on the provincial Minister of Labour to require Target to comply with the Quebec Labour Act, and guarantee that workers at 35 Zellers stores in Quebec have the right to continue their employment — with their current seniority, salary and benefits — when Target takes over their store.

New fisheries unit at Potlotek First Nations in Nova Scotia

Deckhands for the fishery operations of Potlotek First Nations in Nova Scotia have become the newest members of UFCW Canada Local 864 following a successful organizing campaign by the UFCW Canada Eastern Provinces Council (EPC). The bargaining unit of over 40 First Nations in-shore fisherman was certified on June 5 by the Canadian Industrial Relations Board.

The Budget's blow to seniors

When Stephen Harper announced that his government would be raising the eligibility age for Old Age Security (OAS) from 65 to 67, it was judged, except in conservative circles, as being unnecessary. The Parliamentary Budget Officer, the federal and provincial finance ministers’ Research Working Group, and numerous economists have all agreed Canada’s retirement system is sustainable and there is no need to raise the OAS eligibility age.

YIP efforts bring community support to agriculture workers

UFCW Canada’s Youth Internship Program (YIP) recently launched a “Farm Workers Feed Communities” summer course in Leamington, Ontario. The program was met with great success as the youth organized and led a series of outreach initiatives including a community barbeque that celebrated the 10th Anniversary of the Agriculture Workers Alliance (AWA) support centre in Leamington. It was the students’ enthusiasm and hard work that attracted over 1000 local agriculture workers and community members to the event.

On June 11, members of the UFCW Canada National Office joined thousands of community members at dozens of locations across the country to send a message by letter, and by walking, in support of an equal future for First Nations children in Canada.

2012 Leukemia fundraising pushes lifetime campaign over $26 million

Toronto, ON- June 8, 2012 - UFCW Canada's enduring campaign to fund the research efforts of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada (LLSC) reached new highs — and propelled the total raised since the campaign began in the mid-1980's past the $26 million mark.
