UFCW Canada and FNCFCS partner in Shannen’s Dream video project
Toronto – January 22, 2014 – UFCW Canada and the First Nations Child and Family Caring Society (FNCFCS) have come together to produce a new video in support of the Shannen’s Dream campaign to bring equitable education to First Nations children. UFCW Canada and FNCFS are long-time community allies and recently signed a Mutual Support Agreement to accelerate their combined efforts to raise awareness about the inequity faced by First Nations children.

Washington – January 19, 2014 – The National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) in the United States has issued the largest-ever complaint against Walmart for breaking federal labour law by violating workers’ rights. The complaint filed by the federal government agency alleges Walmart illegally fired and disciplined nearly 70 workers, including those who went on strike last June to speak out for better jobs.
Toronto – January 18, 2014 – Statistics Canada has released December job numbers for Ontario and the picture isn’t pretty with the province shedding 39,000 jobs, most of them full time and the unemployment rate rising to 7.9%.
Vancouver – January 17, 2014 – The Supreme Court of British Columbia has denied a petition by Mexico to quash documentary evidence and testimony that corroborates that the Mexican government blacklisted Mexican migrant workers from returning to Canada because they were suspected of being union sympathizers. The evidence had been presented in 2012 to the BC Labour Relations Board by UFCW Canada Local 1518.
Ottawa – January 16, 2014 – The National Household Survey, which replaced the mandatory long-form Census in 2011, was released by Statistics Canada in three waves throughout 2013 and reveals a striking snapshot of Canadian life.
