Members and staff of UFCW Canada Locals 401 and 1118 joined NDP members and political activists from across Alberta to welcome Federal NDP Leader Thomas Mulcair to Calgary on July 12th. Over 200 people came out to meet the new leader at a Calgary Stampede barbeque hosted by Alberta NDP MLA David Eggen, who represents the provincial riding of Edmonton-Calder.
With the Harper government’s attack on workers and several provincial premiers pushing for labour law reform that would take away the rights of workers and weaken their unions, it’s ironic that the fastest growing province in terms of prosperity is a province that respects the important role of unions in building an equitable society.
Thanks to a new smart phone App designed by the International, UFCW activists, friends and supporters in Canada and the United States can now use their iPhones, BlackBerrys and other mobile devices to find the nearest union grocery store in seconds.
Leukemia research was the winner, as dozens of participants and onlookers enjoyed the speed and sunshine at the Second Annual Mini-Indy go-cart races held recently in Regina. The fundraising event drew go-cart enthusiasts from across the region for a fun-filled competition in the parking lot next to the UFCW Canada Local 1400 regional office in Regina.
The Economic Policy Institute of Washington, D.C. has released a new graphic and backgrounder that confirm what labour activists have long known: as union membership has steadily fallen in the United States, income inequality has risen to levels not seen since the 1920s.
The UFCW Canada Migrant Workers Family Support Fund, set up to support the families of the 11 deceased workers and three survivors of a horrific February collision near Hampstead, Ontario, is set to close on July 31, 2012. After this date it will not be possible to donate to the fund.
UFCW Canada activists representing over 20 different local unions gathered in Winnipeg from July 8 to 10 to build strength, solidarity and security at the 26th Annual National Defence Fund (NDF) Convention.
Two young activists and retail veterans have recently launched Retail Report at www.rere.tv. The goal of the web hub for retail activists is to reach out, inform and encourage retail workers in Canada to fight for good jobs and better working conditions for all.
