Education, government action key to addressing racial inequality

Under Canadian law, there is legal protection for victims of discrimination and a guarantee in the Charter of Rights and Freedoms of equality rights for all. But a recent Angus Reid poll has found that one-third of Canadians think racism is still a major problem in our country. And racism definitely exists in Canada, as several studies have shown that racial disparities in income, health status, civic participation, services, and job opportunities continue to persist here.

Unpaid work is not the solution to chronic youth unemployment

Earlier this month, Bank of Canada Governor Stephen Poloz said that young people who can't find work should volunteer or work for free in order to "get some real life experience" and avoid falling into long-term unemployment. Poloz seemed to imply that it is solely up to young people to improve their dire job prospects, and that young Canadians "living in (their parents') basement" are at least partly responsible for the country's high youth jobless rate.

Why the "right to work" for less is the wrong choice for workers

Since 2012, conservative politicians across Canada have unsuccessfully pushed for so-called "right to work" laws, claiming they are needed to attract manufacturing jobs, boost wages, and reduce unemployment. But the track record of these laws in the U.S. shows that right to work is harmful to both workers and the economy, and is simply a political tool designed to weaken unions.

How unions benefit young workers

Over the last two years, Think Forward has explored a number of economic issues currently affecting young people, from the injustice of unpaid internships to the crisis of youth unemployment to rising student debt in Canada. Often we've emphasized how difficult it is for recent graduates to find stable, full-time work in their field that pays a living wage. But one topic we haven't discussed is the major advantage that unions provide to young workers in the face of austerity from both politicians and employers.

The crisis of student debt in North America

In North America, we face a crisis. It is getting worse by the year and is generally marginalized in the mainstream media. It is the crisis of student debt. As of September 2010, the amount that Canadian students owed the federal government for student loanssurpassed $15 billion. And that number doesn’t even include the amount that students owe on private loans, provincial government loans, credit cards, and lines of credit.

Universities and student groups launch innovative campaigns to boost student turnout in elections

As we recently detailed in our articles on mandatory voting and the Ontario election that occurred this past June, voter apathy is increasing in Canada, and young people continue to be far less likely to vote than our older counterparts. For example, a mere 37 percent of eligible voters aged 18 to 24 participated in the last federal election.

Federal parties should adopt student recommendations on addressing youth mental illness

There is a growing, often overlooked, trend that is finally starting to reach the forefront of people’s attention: more and more college and university students are beginning to seek help for mental illness. In many ways this is an unsurprising development – post-secondary students face enormous stress and daily pressures, from maintaining good grades, to dealing with rising tuition fees and debt, to navigating an unfriendly job market both during school and after graduation.

Guest column: An alternative view on unpaid work and internships

For as long as I can remember, I have wanted to be a writer. I started at Carleton University undeclared and later decided to do a combined honours bachelor degree in Journalism and Greek and Roman Studies. As my journalistic skills began to develop, I looked for opportunities outside of the classroom to practice and hone my writing abilities. I sent samples of my work to various publications, and as if a dream came true, a national music magazine called "The Scene" contacted me to cover events in Ottawa.
