Why are interns being asked to work for free?

At the same time that college and university graduates are struggling to find jobs, a majority of employed Canadians under 25 are making minimum wage, and 42 percent of 20- to 29-year-olds are living with their parents, unpaid internships have emerged as another disturbing trend facing young job-seekers in Canada.

Guest column: The car, the commute, and the city

I started commuting at a young age. My parents sent me to a French immersion school that was 50 kilometres away from our house. From the time I was five, I endured a one-hour bus ride twice a day. It sounds awful, but "kid commuting" wasn’t so bad. Since we were children we always had a bus driver to take us home, which meant we had time to play, read, write, imagine, and draw while riding the bus.

Guest column: On disarmament and arms control, Canada has lost its moral purpose

In the late 1990s, the Canadian Government decided to lead the way in banning antipersonnel landmines around the world. The mines were used during times of war, but continued to linger in former combat zones. They posed an enormous threat because they claimed lives and stunted the normal social and economic development of countries long after soldiers returned to their homes.

Where are the jobs? Youth joblessness and underemployment in Canada

If you're under 30, there's a good chance your parents and teachers told you a college or university education is the ticket to a stable, well-paying, and fulfilling career that can provide you with a decent standard of living. But that seemingly logical advice is starting to become a myth.

Guest column: Raising a red flag on school obesity prevention programs

Once upon a time, schools typically sold foods associated with weight gain, such as pop, chips, chocolate bars, and fried food. But in 2011, the government of Ontario decided to save children from bad foods by creating the School Food and Beverage Policy, which provides guidelines for foods sold in school cafeterias. As a result, more "healthy eating" teaching surfaced in every part of the province's school curriculum, from counting calories in math class to food label-reading in gym class.

Guest column: My trip to The Netherlands to debate in The Hague International Model United Nations

From an early age, I have always been interested in politics. I enjoy following global happenings involving poverty, economics, war, and humanitarian efforts to help those in need, as well as numerous other issues that affect the well-being of each and every human regardless of race, gender, or religion.

To strengthen my knowledge of political systems, I joined a group called the Online Model United Nations (O-MUN) in March 2012. It is a Model United Nations (MUN) program where high school students discuss and debate global issues that affect us all.

Guest column: Give yourself a financial head start - invest early, and with a conscience

As a financial security advisor, I work closely with individuals, families, and businesses to plan a stable and secure financial future. One of the best pieces of advice that I give to young adults is to start saving and investing early. The earlier you start saving, the more likely you are to make it a lifelong habit, and that can help you reach your financial goals on time.

Guest column: Why I chose a career in government, and why you should too

Throughout high school and university, I never envisioned working in the public sector. I was always passionate about my city, and saw a real need for change at all levels of government. But after finishing my bachelors degree, I chose to work for my family’s business. A big part of my job involved interacting with municipal officials, and that's when I first became interested in government. I realized that I could help contribute to the planning and growth of my...
