On August 22 at 11 a.m., activists, Zellers workers, and community allies from across Ontario and the Greater Toronto Area will converge on Target's Canadian headquarters in support of over 10,000 Zellers Workers in their fight for fairness at Target.
Workers representing four links in Walmart’s global supply chain – food production, processing, warehousing and retail – recently filed a formal ethics complaint with Walmart’s corporate executives in Los Angeles. The complaint outlines systemic violations of Walmart’s own Statement of Ethics and Standards for Suppliers.
Dr. Kendra Coulter, a labour studies professor at Brock University in St. Catharines, Ontario, has launched a new website that seeks to raise awareness of retail workers' struggles while changing public perceptions of the value of retail jobs. Dubbed Revolutionizing Retail, the site notes that "retail work and workers are often socially and economically devalued (and) this needs to change."
After inspiring the nation and leading the New Democratic Party of Canada to an historic electoral victory as the Official Opposition, beloved NDP Leader Jack Layton succumbed to cancer on August 22, 2011. However, Jack left us with words of hope, love and optimism.
