UN finds Canada and Ontario violate human rights
An agency of the United Nations has ruled a ban on farm unions violates the human rights of Ontario’s 100,000 migrant and domestic farm workers
An agency of the United Nations has ruled a ban on farm unions violates the human rights of Ontario’s 100,000 migrant and domestic farm workers
More than 130 migrant agriculture workers from Mexico and the Caribbean have gone home cheated of thousands of dollars, after the Ontario farm they worked at filed an intent to get creditor protection. Workers had not been paid since early November, after the owner departed for California. He has yet to return.
Over the past decade the Cesar E. Chavez Black Eagle Awards dinner has brought together farm workers, social justice activists, and labour and faith-based organizations to celebrate the legacy of Cesar Chavez — and to honour individuals and organizations committed to the cause. Recently a sold out crowd of more than 300 gathered to honour this year’s recipients at the 11th Annual Black Eagle Awards held in Toronto, hosted by UFCW Canada and the Agricultural Workers Alliance.
The Cesar E. Chavez Black Eagle Award was established 11 years ago to recognize exceptional activists who make outstanding contributions to the fight for justice in Canada’s agriculture industry.
Every year, Black Eagle Award recipients are named in several different fields of activism that include Labour, Legal, Political, Cultural, International, and Academic categories.
This week, we focus on the 2010 Cesar E. Chavez Black Eagle Award recipients for the International and Academic categories.

• The Liberals and Conservatives have made comments that suggest that Canada’s diversity is the primary reason for our current economic crisis. Immigration has been a source of prosperity in our country. The dangerous political strategy of “scapegoating” immigrants and migrants and espousing protectionism and extreme nationalism can quickly degenerate into intolerance, xenophobia and outright racism.
• Limiting immigration will result in a Canadian workforce that is ill equipped to respond to labour market needs once the economy is back on the upswing.
• Stand up against the Conservatives and Liberals who blame immigrant and migrant communities for their parties’ poor economic policies.
• Tell the Conservative Minister of Immigration Jason Kenny, that Canadians want less blame and more solutions in this economic crisis by clicking “Send a Message” Button above right. Your letter will also be copied to both the Liberal and NDP Immigration Critics.
