UFCW Canada joins the call for Transgender Rights

Toronto – June 23, 2014 – UFCW Canada welcomes news that a human rights victory may be close at hand for transgender Canadians. Bill C-279 is close to becoming law – legislation that will finally ensure transgender Canadians are protected from hate crimes under the Criminal Code and guarantee their right to equality under the Canadian Human Rights Act. The bill was first introduced by British Colombia NDP MP Randall Garrison in 2011. It is one of very few opposition MP’s private members bill in recent history to be passed by the House of Commons.

Join UFCW Canada and the world at Pride events in Toronto

UFCW Canada, UFCW Locals, and community partners are gearing up for an exciting celebration of diversity and culture with the quickly approaching Pride festivities in Toronto, that will involve people from around the globe showing their Pride, from June 20 - 29.

Toronto, as the host city for this International gathering of LGBT communities around the globe will also make history, as this will be the first time that the global Pride festival is held in North America. UFCW Canada is excited to take part in many of the events that will be featured throughout this ten-day festival and international celebration incorporating activism, education, and the history and culture of global LGBT communities.

We are aiming for a strong contingent from all UFCW Canada Local Unions at the Pride Parade on Sunday, June 29. UFCW Canada Local Unions, members and activists are also encouraged to join in the many other events in which UFCW Canada participation will be part of.

UFCW activists loud and proud at Winnipeg and Edmonton Pride parades

Winnipeg and Edmonton – June 13, 2014 – UFCW activists proudly shared their solidarity with their LGBT brothers and sisters at recent Pride celebrations in Winnipeg and Edmonton. At the 27th Pride Winnipeg Parade, UFCW Canada Local 1869 and Local 832 activists joined more than 1,000 marchers on June 1 for the largest Pride parade ever held in the city.
