TORONTO – Canada’s largest private-sector union, and leading voice for retail workers, is demanding tougher fines for negligent employers after another Toronto-area gas attendant was killed trying to stop a “Gas and Dash” to allegedly protect his wages.
UFCW Canada helped Break the Silence for the Cuban Five by acting as the primary sponsor for a Peoples’ Tribunal & Assembly in Toronto from September 21 to 23.
Raul Gatica, a long-time a human rights activist, staff member and past coordinator of the Agriculture Workers Alliance (AWA) centre in Surrey, British Columbia, has been awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal for his outstanding commitment and contribution to the rights of migrant agricultural workers in Canada.
A new group of workers are the newest members of the UFCW Canada family after recently voting to join Local 1518. The new members work for Tojalomi Enterprises Ltd., a retail food store, gas station, and cafe located in Fort Fraser, B.C. In a vote conducted on September 10th, the workers proudly said “Yes!” to UFCW Canada.
The Ontario Ministry of Labour is investigating the workplace death of a Mexican migrant agriculture worker who was fatally injured on September 10, at an orchard operation near Belleville. Fausto Martinez-Izazaga, 38, died when an industrial water tank at the agriculture complex fell and crushed him.
