Toronto – December 6, 2015 – December 6 marks the anniversary of the 1989 École Polytechnique Massacre in which 14 women were murdered because they were women. The École Polytechnique was not only a college but also a workplace and two of the women murdered that day were members of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE).
Montreal – December 2, 2015 – A commemorative plaque stands as a permanent fixture on the grounds of Montreal’s École Polytechnique, on which engraved along with the date December 6, 1989, are the names of 14 women who each carried with them the goal of pursuing engineering degrees.
Toronto – November 28, 2015 – UFCW activists will be participating in Shoe Memorial vigils across the country on December 6th – the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women.
Toronto – November 23, 2015 – The International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, commemorated each year on November 25, was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1999.
Toronto – November 19, 2015 – UFCW Canada activists were recently on hand for the launch of Ontario's Gender Wage Gap Steering Committee, which is setting out on a province-wide consultation on how to eliminate wage inequity for women in the Ontario workforce.
Toronto – November 2, 2015 – UFCW Canada advocacy and lobbying efforts were recently reaffirmed when UFCW Canada activists were invited to the Ontario Legislature for the tabling of new legislation that proposes to make Ontario workplaces, campuses, and communities safer from the threat of sexual violence and harassment.
