XL Moose Jaw lockout passes the 60 day mark

Federal New Democratic Party leader Jack Layton visited the XL Foods picket line on Friday, November 13th to talk to locked out workers and offer support.

The workers at the Moose Jaw, SK cow slaughter and processing plant have been locked out since September 18.

With the Palliser federal candidate Noah Evanchuk, they expressed both personal and party support for the workers and talked about the commitment of the NDP to push for changes to Employment Insurance so those needing it will have access.

The NDP leader also noted that the Nilsson brothers (the owners of XL Foods) are acting unfairly to a group of people that have been nothing but loyal workers, and have further hurt the economy with their actions against these locked-out workers.

Layton also called on XL Foods to find a way to get the workers back to the bargaining table and ultimately, back to work.

President of UFCW Canada Local 1400, Norm Neault (centre front row in photo above) stated “I know that the time that Jack has taken out to visit these workers will be a morale boost for them and that in itself is great help at this time.”
