While UFCW Canada members enjoy a hearty and well-deserved turkey dinner with their families on the Thanksgiving weekend, the www.walmartworkerscanada.ca/freespeech campaign marched into its fourth month of full mobilization with a tongue-in-cheek assist to Americans to salvage their favourite Oct. 12 holiday: Columbus Day.

Since it became a federal holiday in the U.S. in 1970 (individual state recognition dates back to 1905), Americans have celebrated the day that commemorates one of the world’s most famous explorers and his faith in the roundness of the globe – but the future existence of Columbus Day may be in question as a result of Walmart’s exclusive claim to circular objects and their cylindrical cousins, as outlined in the retail giant’s recent injunction request against www.walmartworkerscanada.ca, an award-winning labour rights website.

The good news is that it is not too late to save the U.S. Columbus Day holiday – while helping to preserve freedom of speech on the internet at the same time.
