webCampus among CALM Award winners

Two UFCW Canada local unions as well as the National Office communications department were prominently recognized by the 2008 CALM Awards, presented in Saskatoon during the Canadian Association of Labour Media’s annual conference and workshops held at the University of Saskatchewan.

Ontario UFCW Canada Local 1000A was uniquely awarded two of the top writing awards: the “Ed Finn Award” for best feature story, as well as the “Morden Lazarus Prize” for best editorial. In addition, UFCW Canada Locals 175 & 633, also in Ontario, received an honourable mention in the “Best Website Design” category for their charity fundraising website www.tedontheroad.com .

Meanwhile, the UFCW Canada National Office won several awards in the new-media categories.

The National Office won the first-ever CALM “Best Cyberunion” prize for its interactive online learning initiative, webCampus (webcampus.ufcw.ca).

The website www.walmartworkerscanada.ca received the prize for the “Best Overall” labour website.

In addition, the video production Our Voice is Strong (produced to represent UFCW Canada’s presence at last year’s international convention) received the
“Best Video” award.

An honourable mention in the category was given to the popular Facebook/ YouTube video, Stop the Student Minimum Wage Rip-Off.

Finally, the National Office’s Proud to be Union membership booklet won in the “Best Flyer or Brochure”category.
“These awards are a good indication that we are on the right track in developing programs and communications that will be of benefit to our members,” says UFCW Canada National President Wayne Hanley. “And, of course, the Canadian labour movement’s recognition of those efforts is always welcome.”
