Saskatchewan local unions say ‘Yes, we CAN’

The leaders of UFCW Canada’s four local unions in Sas­katchewan recently came together in Saskatoon to establish the province’s first Community Action Network (CAN), which is committed to looking for and creating opportuni­ties for the union to build stronger relationships with mem­bers and their communities.

UFCW Canada builds presence at Caribana

For the second year in a row, UFCW Canada joined over a million revelers at the Toronto Caribana parade, one of the world’s largest Caribbean cultural celebrations.  The parade was held on Aug. 1, and made its start at the Canadian National Exhibition (CNE) grounds before moving west, slowly and loudly, down the city’s Lakeshore Blvd.

The new UFCW Canada campaign to expose Walmart’s attempt to hush most of www.walmartworkerscanada.ca is taking the internet by storm and capturing the attention of some of the world’s most widely read and trusted news sources, including the New York Times,
the Huffington Post and the
Wall Street Journal.

Bloggers across North America are picking up the banner for free speech by doing their bit to spread the word about Walmart’s outrageous request for a court injunction against www.walmartworkerscanada.ca, the long-standing and award winning labour rights website created for Walmart “associates” and maintained by UFCW Canada.

AWA community celebrates opening of Virgil centre

Heavy rain and thunderstorms were not enough to stop more than 250 workers from attending the annual open house held by UFCW Canada and the Agriculture Workers Alliance (AWA) recently in Virgil, Ont.

HFX09 a major success

UFCW Canada members from across the country con­verged in Halifax Aug. 14-16 to attend the 2009 NDP federal convention, dubbed “HFX09.” With more than 40 members attending from UFCW Canada local unions as well as mem­bers representing riding associations, UFCW Canada had the second-largest labour delegation at the convention.
