Ottawa, ON - April 13, 2012 -The Health Department of the Native Women’s Association of Canada (NWAC) is extremely distressed and concerned over Health Canada’s decision to cut all funding for projects aimed at improving the health of Aboriginal women in Canada. Few people in the world are in greater need of human rights protection than Indigenous peoples. Although governments have a duty and responsibility to ensure the welfare and safety of all their citizens, Indigenous peoples are often the target of policies designed to erode or suppress their rights and distinct cultural identities. Canada is no exception!
Madeleine Parent, a Quebec trade union activist and feminist best remembered for organizing textile workers in the 1940s, died in Montreal earlier this month at the age of 93. Parent devoted her life to union activism and feminist causes, beginning in 1942, when she organized a strike against Dominion Textile on behalf of the International Ladies Garment Workers Union.
The Ontario Government hired economist Don Drummond to create a report that identifies potential cuts to Ontario's budget. The paper recommends greater service and job cuts than the right-wing Harris Conservatives implemented when they governed in the 1990s. If enacted, the proposed cutbacks will affect women more than men. According to During the economic downturn of 2008-2009, Ontario families relied on women's incomes to pay the bills as many males had been laid off. It appears that more Ontario families will be put out of work as a result of Drummond's suggestions.
